Chapter Four
Triston barreled down the hallway, his sneakers squeaking on the clean floor. Lillian coughed from the smoke invading her lungs. Her body bouncing underneath her robe as she was carried out to safety. Triston’s nervousness was emanating off of him, causing her heart to race faster. Entering the lobby, he set her down. Her bare feet touching the cold tile, Lillian tightened the soft cotton around her. She felt very exposed in front of all the people exiting the gym, and the first responders running past her towards the commotion. Tobias was by the front desk, speaking quickly with a fireman. Lillian couldn’t help but wonder if the man was capable of talking slowly. She watched as Triston approached his father, placing his hand on the back of his suit jacket. Listening to the men, then glancing at his father’s back, Triston realized he had left a large oiled handprint on the beige coat. He slid his hand across his shirt and continued questioning.
